Ordinance 250541: Public Works Permit Revisions

UPDATE: This ordinance was filed on 5-20-25. It is being routed to the relevant committees.

Ordinance 250541 was introduced on 5-20-25 by Mayor Lurie and Supervisor Mandelman.

This ordinance is part of the Mayor's PermitSF initiative, intended to streamline permitting and to help small businesses. The ordinance includes various Public Works (DPW) changes including:

  • Cafe Table and Chairs and Merchandise Displays would no longer require permits, but instead would require annual registration.

  • Allows registrations for Cafe Tables/Chairs and Merchandise Displays to apply for a variance if they cannot meet all the guidelines.

  • Eliminates the need for Minor Street Encroachment permits for:

    • Elements attached to the building that extend no more than 4" into the public right of way.

    • Minor elements attached to the building and approved as part of a Building permit. Includes utilities, water spouts, standpipes, out-swinging doors, and security gates. Also includes ADA actuators and wheelchair lifts.
