Ellis Act Dates

UPDATE: This legislation was introduced on 4-5-22 and was approved on 6-17-22.

Ordinance 220341 was introduced on 4-5-22 by Supervisor Melgar.

This Ordinance:

  • Clarifies that the date a property is withdrawn is based on the latest date that any tenancy is terminated.

  • Requires that an owner who returns a unit to the market after an Ellis Act eviction must return the entire property to the market.

  • Clarifies that an owner's payment of damages does not eliminate their obligation to re-offer the unit up on re-rental to the displaced tenants.

  • Increases relocation payments owners must pay to tenants when evicting under the Ellis Act.
