APPROVED: Ord 231165: Lithium-Ion Battery Storage

UPDATE: This ordinance was approved by the Board of Supervisors on 2-13-24 and signed by the Mayor on 2-21-24.

Ordinance 231165 was introduced on 11-7-23 by Supervisors Peskin, Preston, Melgar, Chan, and Mandelman.

This legislation modifies the Fire Code related to storage, charging, spacing, and cabinets required where lithium-ion battery charging occurs. It would require that powered mobility devices with lithium-ion batteries, be charged in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Inspections of batteries would be required, and minimum safety standards for charging and storage would be required. It also requires that the Fire Department develop an informational campaign to educate the public on the fire risks of these devices and batteries.
