Hi there. My name is Serina Calhoun. I’m an Architect with a small practice in San Francisco. I’m also a midwestern baker, voracious reader, and thrower of elaborate theme parties. And now I find myself adding blog writer to my resume. (No one is more surprised by this than I am!)
I recently celebrated the 10 year anniversary of the launch of my architecture practice, Syncopated Architecture. When I founded my company, I set out with one primary focus; to provide the highest quality of service to my clients. That’s it.
That sound simple, I know. But working in a city as complex as San Francisco, makes that one simple goal profoundly difficult to achieve. For example, most of my residential clients would approach me when they found out they were pregnant with their first child and needed to expand their home. The problem is, in SF, that process can take up to 2 years just for permit approvals. It broke my heart to have to tell my clients their child would be walking and talking before their addition was finished. I got very tired of having to deliver that same bad news over and over to all my residential clients.
Then I started to see the impact to my commercial clients. Small business owners trying to open their very first business, negotiating their first lease with their life savings and their livelihood
